Personal injury can result if the machine moves while checking the service brakes. If the machine begins to move during the check, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake. |
This test will determine if the service brakes are functional. The test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort.

If the machine moved while testing the service brakes, inspect the service brake components for wear or damage. Repair or replace the worn or damaged service brake components as required before returning the machine to service. |
Machine Preparation
Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.

Steering frame lock in the STORED position |
Make sure that the steering frame lock is in the STORED position.
Test the parking brake on a dry, level surface.
Fasten the seat belt before testing the service brakes.
Testing Procedure
- Start the engine. Raise the bucket slightly.
- Use the transmission neutralizer override switch in the cab in order to disable the transmission neutralizer.
- Apply the service brakes and disengage the parking brake.
- Place the transmission direction and speed control lever in the THIRD SPEED REVERSE position.
- Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.
- Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Place the transmission direction and speed control in the NEUTRAL position. Engage the parking brake.
- Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.
