Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure. |
Personal injury or death can result from a parking brake malfunction. Do not operate the machine if the parking brake does not function correctly. Be sure the parking brake components are adjusted correctly before attempting to return the machine to service. |
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before working on the machine. |
Machine Preparation
- Park the machine on a smooth level surface.
- Place the transmission control in the NEUTRAL position.
- Lower the bucket and/or any work tools to the ground.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Shut off the engine.
- Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.
- Install the steering frame lock.

- Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in clear sight of the operator.
- Disengage the parking brake.
Testing and Adjusting Procedure
- Remove the front drive shaft from the transmission output shaft yoke.
- Remove eight bolts (6) that hold brake drum (3) on to the drive shaft yoke. This allows rotation of brake drum (3) for correct adjustment.

- Access starwheel (1) through access holes (2) . Rotate starwheel (1) until the brake shoes press against the brake drum. The brake shoes must cause enough drag so that the drum (3) cannot be rotated by hand. Then rotate starwheel (1) in the opposite direction by 12 clicks.
- Push up on lever (4) . Dimension (A) is measured from the centerline of lever (4) to the bottom mounting hole of the bracket assembly for parking brake actuator. Dimension (A) equals 56 ± 15 mm (2.2 ± 0.6 inches).
Note: In order to adjust lever (4) , remove lever (4) from the splined shaft (5) . Rotate lever (4) about splined shaft (5) in order to achieve dimension (A) .
- Install eight bolts (6) that hold brake drum (3) on to the drive shaft yoke.
- Install the front drive shaft.
- Without applying pressure to actuator (7) , adjust rod (9) to equal dimension (B) . Dimension (B) equals 95.0 mm (3.74 inch).

- Start the engine. Operate the engine until actuator (7) is pressurized to a minimum of 14830 kPa (2150 psi). At this pressure, rod (9) fully extends.
- Make a final adjustment of the length of rod (9) . To adjust, push up on lever (4) so that the cam for the parking brake contacts the brake shoes. Rotate yoke (10) in order to allow installation of clevis pin (12) into yoke (10) , and lever (4) .
Note: The parking brake should be in the DISENGAGED position for the next step.
- Install cotter (11) in clevis pin (12) .
- Engage the parking brake by releasing the hydraulic oil pressure in parking brake actuator (7) . Check dimension (B) . Dimension (B) must be greater than 85.0 mm (3.35 inches).
