Illustration 1g01257350

For information on inspecting the flywheel housing, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting.

Note: Before installation of the flywheel housing, inspect the front face of the flywheel housing and the rear face of the cylinder block. The components must be free of the following substances: oil, fuel, water, gasket adhesive, assembly compounds and any other foreign material.

To seal the joint between the flywheel housing and the cylinder block, apply a 6 mm (0.250 inch) of 4C-5300 Gasket Sealant or 185-3984 Gasket Sealant to the mating surface of the flywheel housing.

During assembly, use the hard washers that are listed in Table 2.

(1) Bolt

Tighten all the bolts that are shown in View D-D to the following torque:

Torque ... 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft)

(2) Seal

Lubricate the bore lightly with clean engine oil.

(3) Stud

Put 4C-9502 Sealant on the nut end of the studs.

Torque ... 110 ± 20 N·m (80 ± 15 lb ft)

(4) Install the two dowels to the following height. ... 3.5 ± 0.5 mm (.14 ± .02 inch)

(5) Install one dowel even with the top face of the housing.

(6) Install three dowels to the following height. ... 6.0 ± 0.5 mm (.24 ± .02 inch)

Tighten the bolts that hold the flywheel housing to the engine block evenly. Refer to Table 1 for the correct position.

Torque

1/2 - 13 NC ... 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft)
5/8 - 11 NC ... 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft)
