CB-634D Vibratory Compactor Vibratory System Caterpillar

Relief Valve (Pressure Override) - Test and Adjust

Usage:

CB-634D CDF

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the vibratory system.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Before you conduct the testing and adjusting on the vibratory valve, the following steps must be followed:

    • Apply the parking brake.

    • Place the speed/direction control lever in NEUTRAL.

    • Place the vibratory switch in the automatic position.

    • Place tires under both drums.

    • Place a 60000 kPa (8700 psi) pressure gauge on pressure tap (2) .

    • Place a 60000 kPa (8700 psi) pressure gauge on pressure tap (3) .

  1. Start the engine. Run the engine at high idle. Place the vibratory switch in the dual drum vibration mode. The eccentric weights should be at high amplitude.

Trace Chart For The Main Pressure Relief

    (X) High pressure relief has started.

    (Y) Pressure override

    (Z) Operating pressure

    (S) High pressure relief has stopped.

  1. The trace chart shows the relationship between the pressure and the time of the vibratory oil pressure. The high pressure reading (X) is taken when the engine is started. The POR pressure (Y) is recorded approximately four seconds after the engine is started. The working pressure (Z) is recorded approximately eight seconds after the engine is started. The pressure spike (S) is recorded when the vibrations stop.

Forward Direction

  1. Move the propel control lever to the forward direction. Record the step oil pressure setting from the gauge at pressure tap (3). The step oil pressure setting is the pressure after the peak pressure as the eccentric weights accelerate. The initial high pressure will be the high pressure relief. After the peak in pressure, record the pressure. The POR pressure should be 33000 ± 700 kPa (4785 ± 100 psi).

  1. If the POR pressure is not correct, adjust the POR valve (4). Use a wrench to loosen the locknut. Adjust the POR pressure. Turn the screw clockwise in order to increase the pressure. Turn the screw counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure.

  1. Recheck the pressure at the gauge on pressure tap (3) .

Reverse Direction

  1. Move the propel control lever to the reverse direction. Record the step oil pressure setting from the gauge at pressure tap (2).

  1. Recheck the pressure at the gauge on pressure tap (2) .
