Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system. |
NOTICE |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Note: Perform the Parking Brake - Test before you conduct the Case Drain Flow for Piston Motor (Axle Propel) - Test.
Note: Perform the following steps before conducting this procedure:
- Park the machine on a flat, level surface.
- Block the wheels.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Stop the engine.
- Loosen the set screw. Rotate needle valve (1) clockwise until the valve seats. Tighten the set screw.
Note: Needle valve (1) is located in the engine compartment on the right side of the machine.

- Disconnect case drain line (2) from the right motor.
Illustration 2 | g01083650 |
- Assemble Tool A. Connect 90° elbow (3) to the fitting on the motor. Connect straight connector (4) to the hose.
Illustration 3 | g01083653 |
Illustration 4 | g01083654 |
- Start the engine. Operate the engine at 2250 rpm (high idle). Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool D. Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43° ± 5.6°C (110° ± 10°F).
- Move shift switch (7) to HIGH. Move parking brake switch (6) to RELEASE.
Illustration 5 | g01083667 |
- Read the flow on the flow meter. The flow should be less than 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm).
- Move propel lever (5) out of NEUTRAL (one quarter to one-half full travel).
- Record the flow on the flow meter as "right motor case flow". The flow should be less than 15 L/min (4 US gpm).
Note: The flushing valve directs 9.5 ± 1.9 L/min (2.5 ± 0.5 US gpm) into the motor case. In order to determine actual motor leakage, subtract the flow from the flushing valve from the total flow.
- If the flow rate is within the specified range, return propel lever (5) to NEUTRAL. Then, stop the engine. Remove the tooling. Reconnect case drain line (2) on the right motor.
- Disconnect line (8) from the thermal bypass valve.
Illustration 6 | g01083700 |
- Assemble Tool B, and connect the tool between line (8) and the thermal bypass valve, as shown above.
Illustration 7 | g01083702 |
- Disconnect hose (10) from the left propel motor. Then, cap port (9) of the motor, and connect Tool C to the hose. Place the other end of the hose of Tool C into the filler tube of the hydraulic tank.
Illustration 8 | g01083703 |
- Start the engine. Operate the engine at 2250 rpm (high idle). Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool D. Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43° ± 5.6°C (110° ± 10°F).
- Move propel lever (5) out of NEUTRAL (one quarter to one-half full travel).
- Record the flow on the flow meter as "total motor case drain plus flushing flow". The flow should be less than 19 ± 5 L/min (5 ± 1.3 US gpm).
- Move propel lever (5) to NEUTRAL. Subtract the measurement that was recorded in Step 8 from the measurement that was recorded in Step 15. The total should be less than 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm).
- If the flow rate is within the specified range, stop the engine. Then, remove the tooling and reconnect the hoses.
