NOTICE

When the front drive shaft is installed, it must be installed in phase with the front axle assembly yoke. The front drive shaft must be installed in phase with the center and rear drive shafts. Serious component damage could occur. Be certain that all the joint groups, all the yokes, and all the lubricating fittings are aligned.

  1. Install support bearing (13).

  2. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of bolts (12) prior to installation.

  3. Install bolts (12) and the nuts.

  4. Use two people or a suitable jack to install front drive shaft (11). The weight of front drive shaft (11) is approximately 44 kg (97 lb).

  5. Position universal joint (10), as shown.

  6. Apply Tooling (B) and then apply Tooling (C) to the threads of bolts (9) prior to installation.

  7. Install eight bolts (9). Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 300 ± 30 N·m (220 ± 22 lb ft).

  8. Connect hose assemblies (6), (7) and (8).

  9. Install yoke (4) and O-ring seal (5).

  10. Apply Tooling (B) and then apply Tooling (C) to the threads of bolt (2) prior to installation.

  11. Install retainer (3) and bolt (2). Tighten bolt (2) to a torque of 475 ± 60 N·m (350 ± 44 lb ft).

  12. Connect hose assembly (1).

  13. Lubricate the front drive shaft and drive shaft support bearing. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Drive Shaft Universal Joints, Splines and Bearings - Inspect/Lubricate".

  14. Check the oil level of the front differential and final drive assemblies. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil Level (With Axle Oil Cooler) - Check" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil Level (Without Axle Oil Cooler) - Check".

End By:

  1. Install the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".

  2. Separate the steering frame lock. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".
