Timing Gear Cover & Oil Pump

Usage:

Remove & Install Timing Gear Cover & Oil Pump

Start By:

a. remove expansion tank and heat exchanger

b. remove crankshaft pulley

c. remove oil pan

FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENT

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove bolts (7) and front support (6). Remove water lines (1) and (3) from the exhaust manifolds. Remove tachometer drive adapter (2). Remove elbow (4).

2. Remove elbow (5) and raw water pump (8).

3. Remove the clamps from the water sleeves in each cylinder head. Push the sleeves into the timing gear cover with Tool (A) and a screwdriver.

4. Remove the bolts that hold the timing gear cover to the cylinder block. Be sure to remove the bolt that is behind elbow (4). Put identification of the bolts as to their location for use at installation.


NOTICE

Be extra careful not to cause damage of the crankshaft front seal during removal and installation of the timing gear cover.


5. Install two 7/16 -14 NC Forged Eyeboltsin the timing gear cover. Fasten a suitable lifting device and remove timing gear cover (9) and the oil pump from the dowels on the cylinder block. The weight of the cover and pump is 61 kg (136 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the timing gear cover and oil pump.

6. Clean the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and timing gear cover. Install the timing gear cover gasket on the cylinder block.

NOTE: Make sure the water sleeves are installed in the timing gear cover. Put oil or grease on the seals for easier installation.

7. Install two 7/16 -14 NC Forged Eyeboltsin the timing gear cover. Fasten a suitable lifting device and put the timing gear cover (9) and the oil pump in position on the engine. Make sure the oil pump gear and crankshaft gear are in alignment.

8. Install the bolts that hold the cover in place.

9. Push the water sleeves into the cylinder heads with Tool (A) and a screwdriver. Install the clamps to hold the water sleeves.

10. Put front support (6) in position and install bolts (7).

11. Install elbow (4) and the bolts that hold it to the timing gear cover. Connect water lines (1) and (3) to the exhaust manifolds.

12. Install tachometer drive adapter (2) and the bolts.

13. Install elbow (5) and raw water pump (8).

End By:

a. install oil pan

b. install crankshaft pulley

c. install expansion tank and heat exchanger
