Installation Procedure

1. Install differential and bevel gear (9) into axle housing (10).

2. Install bearing cup (8) (not shown). Use Tooling (A) and install spanner nut (7).

3. Position flanges (4) and install bolts (2) and studs (3).

4. Oscillate the pinion shaft and use Tooling (A) to advance the spanner nuts until there is slight backlash with no end play.

5. Install a dial type torque wrench onto Tooling (B). Measure the total rotating torque. Use the following formula in order to calculate the total rotating torque (TRT): P equals the rotating torque of the pinion shaft. The rotating torque for the pinion shaft is 1.80 to 2.60 N·m (16.0 to 23.0 lb in). Use the measured amount of rotating torque for the pinion shaft in the following equation. TRT = P + 0.280 N·m (2.48 lb in) to P + 0.467 N·m (4.13 lb in)

6. If the total rotating torque (TRT) is less than the specified amount tighten both spanner nuts equally. If the total rotating torque (TRT) is greater than the specified amount, loosen both spanner nuts equally. Be sure to always maintain slight backlash.

7. Install Tooling (C). Mount Tooling (D) onto the center housing, as shown. Measure the backlash between the pinion and the bevel gear. The proper backlash setting is 0.180 to 0.230 mm (0.0071 to 0.0091 inch).

8. If the backlash is not within the specification, retract one spanner nut and advance the opposite spanner nut equally. This will maintain the bearing preload. If the backlash is less than the specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (A). If the backlash is greater than the specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (B).

9. Install retainer (6) into spanner nut (7). Install bolt (5). Tighten bolt (5) to a torque of 13 N·m (10 lb ft).

10. Install tube assembly (1).

End By:

1. Install the service and parking brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service and Parking Brake - Install".

2. Install the front axle onto the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Axle (Fixed) - Install".
