Two new tools help the technician remove the main bearing caps and install the main bearing caps on the above engines. The 230-5843 Main Bearing Cap Tool As works with early 3500 Series Engines that use main bearing caps with 19.05 mm (0.75 inch) threaded bolts. The 236-6688 Main Bearing Cap Tool As works with later 3500 Series Engines that use main bearing caps with 22.23 mm (0.875 inch) threaded bolts.

The tools, which are used in pairs, can be installed through the side access openings. After the tools are installed, the technician can easily lower the main bearing caps or lift the main bearing caps by turning the nuts on the tools.

Procedure for Removal of the Main Bearing Caps.

    1. Loosen the four bolts which secure the main bearing caps.

    2. Remove the two outer bolts from the main bearing cap. Install the short, threaded end of the one tool in each outer bolt hole. Hand tighten the tools until the tools reach the bottoms of the bolt holes.

    3. Tighten the nuts and washers until the washers are against the main bearing cap.

    4. Remove the two inner bolts from the main bearing cap.

    5. Turn the nuts in order to lower the main bearing cap for access to the bearings.

Procedure for Installation of the Main Bearing Caps.

    1. Turn the nuts in order to raise the main bearing cap to the block.

    2. Install the two inner bolts that secure the main bearing cap.

    3. Loosen the nuts on the tools. Remove the tools from the engine.

    4. Install the two out bolts that secure the main bearing caps.

    5. Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly Manual for the specific information on clearances, torques and tightening sequences for the main bearing cap installation.
