Adjustment of Transfer Gear End Play

  1. Prior to assembly of the components use 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) shim stock or a standard feeler gauge to check the following:

    1. Ensure that the bearing cups are seated in the case assembly and the bearing cages.

    2. Ensure that the bearing cones are seated on the transfer gears.

  2. Prior to assembly, lubricate the bearing cups and the bearing cones with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  3. Position case assembly (1) horizontally.

  4. Apply Tooling (A) to case assembly (1) using a 3.0 ± 0.5 mm (0.12 ± 0.02 inch) continuous bead or spread sealant with a roller.

  5. Assemble transfer gear (5), transfer gear (11), gear housing cover (2), bearing cage (6), bearing cage (10) and bearings without shims (4) and (9) or O-ring seal (7).

  6. Install two bolts evenly spaced in each bearing cage (6) and (10).

  7. Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 2.25 N·m (20 lb in).

  8. Rotate transfer gears (5) and (11) at least three revolutions to seat the bearings.

  9. Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

  10. Repeat Step 8 and Step 9.

    (8) Gap
    (12) Feeler gauge

  11. Measure gaps (3) and (8) between the gear housing cover and the bearing cages.

Note: Measurement to be taken at each bolt as indicated. Refer to Illustration 2.

  12. Add the two measurements for each bearing cage together. Divide the sum of the two measurements for each bearing cage by two. This is the average gap for each bearing cage.

  13. Add 0.41 mm (0.016 inch) to the average gap measurement for bearing cage (6) in order to determine the thickness of shims (4) that are required.

  14. Add 0.46 mm (0.018 inch) to the average gap measurement for bearing cage (10) in order to determine the thickness of shims (9) that are required.

  15. Remove bearing cages (6) and (10).

  16. Install the required shims (4) and (9).

  17. Install bearing cage (6) and the eight bolts.

  18. Tighten the eight bolts to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  19. Lubricate O-ring seal (7) lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  20. Install O-ring seal (7) on bearing cage (10).

  21. Install bearing cage (10) and the seven bolts.

  22. Tighten the seven bolts to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  23. Measure end play of transfer gear (5). Add or remove shims (4) that were installed in Step 16 to achieve an end play of 0.05 ± 0.03 mm (0.002 ± 0.001 inch).

  24. Measure end play of transfer gear (11). Add or remove shims (9) that were installed in Step 16 to achieve an end play of 0.05 + 0.05 - 0.03 mm (0.002 + 0.002 - 0.001 inch).
