Pistons and Connecting Rods - Disassemble

Start By:

  1. Remove the pistons and connecting rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston and Connecting Rods - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Remove connecting rod bolts (5) from connecting rod (7) .

  1. Remove connecting rod bearings (10) from connecting rod cap (11) and connecting rod (7) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove compression rings (1) and (2), and oil control ring (3) from piston (4) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining rings (8) that hold piston pin (6) in position.

  1. Remove piston pin (6) from piston (4) .

    Note: If the piston pin cannot be removed by hand, raise the temperature of the piston to 45 ± 5 °C (113 ± 9 °F). Do not use a torch to heat the piston.

  1. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to remove piston pin bearing (9) from connecting rod (7) .

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 in order to disassemble the remaining pistons and connecting rods.
