Removal Procedure
Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine. To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps. Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on. |
Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system on this machine after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury can result if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. In order to prevent possible injury, release the hydraulic system pressure before working on any fitting, hose, or hydraulic component. Lower all work tools to the ground before service is started. If the hydraulic system must be serviced, tested, or adjusted with the work tool in the raised position, the work tool and lift cylinders must be supported properly. Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Reference: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced before performing the following procedure.
Perform the following steps in order to release the hydraulic system pressure.
- Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. The location should also be dry and free of debris.
- Lower the felling head to the ground.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Stop the engine.
- Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position without starting the engine.
- Place the hydraulic lockout in the UNLOCKED position.
- Move the joysticks and the pedals through the full range of travel. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the hydraulic system.
Note: If the hydraulic circuit requires the activation of a switch for operation, activate the necessary switches for the operation of the hydraulic circuit.
- Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.
- Push in the plunger for the hydraulic tank breaker relief valve until all pressure is released.
- Ensure that the felling head is resting level on the lower skids prior to starting this procedure.
- Remove four bolts (1) and washers from each cover (2). There are a total of two covers (2), eight bolts (1) and eight washers.

- The control lines for the arms are located in the left side cover plate. The control lines for the piston motor that drives the disc saw are located in the right side cover plate. Remove the hoses and cap the hoses that connect to each of the following hydraulic functions:
- Grapple Arms (Head End)
- Grapple Arms (Rod End)
- Accumulator Arms (Head End)
- Accumulator Arms (Rod End)
- Port for the motor (B)
- Port for the motor (A)
- Port for the case drain (T)
- Grapple Arms (Head End)

Disconnect the hydraulic hoses before uncoupling the work tool from the machine in order to prevent the work tool from moving, and the possibility of injury or death. |
- Remove two bolts (4) and (6) from the right side of the felling head. Remove any washers behind the bolts.
