Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Remove the camshaft gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Gear - Remove".
- Remove the electronic unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electronic Unit Injectors - Remove".
- Remove all of the rocker arm shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Arm and Shaft - Remove".
- Remove the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".
- Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".
- Remove the fuel filter base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Filter Base - Remove".
- Remove the fumes disposal group. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fumes Disposal Group - Remove and Install".
Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshaft while the camshaft gear is removed. If the front gear group is not correctly timed during installation, interference can occur between the pistons and the valves, resulting in damage to the engine. |

- Remove bolts (1) and thrust plate (2) in order to remove adapter (3) .
- Remove bolts (4) and plate (5) .

- Remove O-ring seal (8) and O-ring seal (9) from sealing plate (7) .

- Disconnect harness assembly (10) .

- Remove tube assemblies (12) and (16) .
- Remove hose (15) .
- Remove bolts (13) and remove manifold (14) .

- Remove bolts (17) .

- Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove cylinder head (18) . The weight of cylinder head (18) is approximately 293 kg (645 lb).

- Remove oil seal (19) , water seals (20) , and gasket (21) from the cylinder block.

- Remove spacer plate (22) from the cylinder block.

- Remove gasket (23) from the cylinder block.
- Remove O-ring seal (24) from the dowel in the cylinder block.
Note: If the cylinder head was removed from the cylinder block as a result of a failed head gasket, refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9564, "3400 Cylinder Head Joint Repair Procedure" for additional information.
