Capacitor

(1) Housing

(2) Terminal

  • Remove the capacitor from the alternator.

    1. Touch terminal (2) to housing (1) in order to discharge the capacitor.

Note: Discharge the capacitor after each measurement.

    1. Connect the multimeter leads across terminal (2) and housing (1) of the capacitor.

    1. Measure the resistance.

Expected Result: The resistance is low for a short period of time. The resistance stabilizes above 100000 ohms.

      Results:

OK - The resistance stabilizes above 100000 ohms. The capacitor is normal. Repeat Step 2. STOP.

NOT OK - The resistance does NOT stabilize above 100000 ohms. The capacitor has failed. Replace the capacitor. STOP.
