The 1W6440 Head Gasket is the replacement for the former 8N7264 Head Gasket which has been cancelled. Because of the change to the new head gasket there is an increase in cylinder head bolt, or nut, torque. The torque that is given in this instruction is for use only with the installation of the 1W6440 Head Gasket.
NOTE: The 1W6440 Cylinder Head Gasket is for use only with those engines that have all 8N9174 Cylinder Liners installed in the cylinder block. For those earlier counterbored cylinder blocks that have 1S2587 Cylinder Liners in the cylinder block, use the 8M2970 Cylinder Head Gasket and the 4S9155 Push Rod Compartment Gasket. If an earlier counterbore engine has both 1S2587 Cylinder Liners and 8N9174 Cylinder Liners in the cylinder block, use only the 8M2970 Cylinder Head Gasket and the 4S9155 Push Rod Compartment Gasket.
NOTE: If the 8M2970 Cylinder Head Gasket and the 4S9155 Push Rod Compartment Gasket are used, see the specific Service Manual for cylinder head bolt or nut torque.
For engines with spacer plate, put clean engine oil on the bolt threads and:
1. Tighten bolts 1 thru 20 in sequence shown to ... 230 ± 10 lb.ft.(307 ± 14 N·m)
2. Again tighten bolts 1 thru 20 in sequence shown to ... 350 ± 10 lb.ft.(470 ± 14 N·m)
3. Tighten bolts 21 thru 25 in sequence shown to ... 75 ± 10 lb.ft.(100 ± 14 N·m)
4. Again tighten bolts 1 thru 20 in sequence shown (hand torque only) to ... 350 ± 10 lb.ft.(470 ± 14 N·m)
5. Again tighten bolts 21 thru 25 in sequence shown to ... 75 ± 10 lb.ft.(100 ± 14 N·m)
For engines without a spacer plate, put clean engine oil on the stud threads and:
1. Tighten all nuts by number to ... 230 ± 10 lb.ft.(307 ± 14 N·m)
2. Again tighten all nuts by number to ... 350 ± 10 lb.ft.(470 ± 14 N·m)
3. Again tighten all nuts by number (hand torque only) to ... 350 ± 10 lb.ft.(470 ± 14 N·m)
