824G Series II Wheel Dozer, 825G Series II Soil Compactor and 826G Series II Landfill Compactor Braking System Caterpillar

Parking Brake - Test

Usage:

824G II AWW
This procedure should be used to determine if the parking brake is functioning properly. This procedure is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm varies depending on the machine.

The 824G Series II Wheel Tractor and the 825G Series II Soil Compactor are equipped with three transmission speeds. The 826G Series II Landfill Compactor is equipped with two transmission speeds. The test procedure for the service brakes varies depending on the transmission speeds that are available.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing the parking brake.

If the machine begins to move during the test, reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the service brakes.

----------------------

Test the parking brake on a dry, level surface.

Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.

Test Procedure for the 824G and the 825G

Steering Frame Lock

(1) Steering frame lock in the STORED position.

  1. Make sure that the steering frame lock is in the STORED position.

  1. Fasten the seat belt before you test the parking brake.

  1. Start the engine. Raise the work tool slightly.

  1. The autoshift switch should be in the OFF position.

Note: The following step will produce a Warning Category 3. The parking brake indicator will turn ON and the master action light will flash. The action alarm will sound.

  1. Engage the parking brake. Change the upshift gear speed switch to THIRD SPEED. Change the transmission direction control switch to the FORWARD position.

  1. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.

  1. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Switch the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.

  1. If the machine was able to move during the testing of the parking brake, inspect the brake components for proper adjustment, wear, or damage. Service the parking brake before you return the machine to operation.

  1. Perform this test again after servicing the parking brake.

Test Procedure for the 826G

  1. Follow the 824G test procedures in Step 1 to Step 4.

Note: The following step will produce a Warning Category 3. The parking brake indicator will turn ON and the master action light will flash. The action alarm will sound.

  1. Engage the parking brake. Change the upshift gear speed switch to SECOND SPEED. Change the transmission direction control switch to the FORWARD position.

  1. Gradually increase the engine speed to 950 rpm. Do not exceed 950 rpm.

  1. With the engine speed at 950 rpm, the machine should not move.
