Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Park the machine on level ground. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position and ensure that the parking brake is engaged. Shut off the engine.

  1. Turn the engine start switch key to the ON position. Operate each hydraulic function several times in each direction in order to relieve pressure from the hydraulic system.

  1. Turn the engine start switch key to the OFF position.

  1. Open the engine enclosure and locate filler cap (1). The filler cap is installed on upper hydraulic tank (2) .

  1. Clean the area around the filler cap (1). Remove the filler cap in order to relieve pressure from the hydraulic tanks.

  1. Clean the outside of filter element housing (3) in clean nonflammable solvent. Use a wrench on hexagon (5) to slacken the filter element housing. Unscrew and remove the filter element housing. The oil filter will contain oil. Remove the old filter element and discard the old oil filter element.

  1. Wash the filter element housing in clean nonflammable solvent. Dry the housing with pressurized air. The maximum air pressure for cleaning or for drying is 205 kPa (30 psi).

  1. Clean the filter housing base (4). Apply a thin film of clean oil to the contact surfaces of the filter housing base (4) .

  1. Install a new filter element into the filter element housing.

  1. Install the filter element housing. Use a wrench on hexagon (5) to tighten the housing. When the seal for the oil filter housing contacts the filter base turn the housing for an additional 3/4 of a turn.

  1. Tighten filler cap (1) .
