Main Components of Longitudinal Stability Indicator (LSI)

(1) Ground wire

(2) Connector (power supply)

(3) Connector

(4) Harness

(5) Sensor

(6) Display module

The longitudinal stability indicator (LSI) monitors the forward stability of the machine. The LSI provides audible signals and visual signals in order to alert the operator of the condition of a loaded machine.

The main components of the LSI are sensor (5) and display module (6). The sensor is mounted on the rear axle and the display module is located inside the cab. Harness (4) connects the sensor to connector (3) on the harness for the display module. Harness (4) is routed from the rear axle through the cab to the instrument panel.

The LSI is powered by the machine electrical system and power supply to the display module is through connector (2). Table 1 shows the power supply that is required to operate the LSI.

Table 1
Power Supply
Nominal Voltage     12 Volts DC
Voltage Range     10.5 Volts to 15.5 Volts
Current      (1)100 mA to 300 mA
( 1 ) The current will depend on the load that is indicated on the display module.

The display module is grounded through ground wire (1). The ground wire is attached to the cab frame next to the display module.

The LSI is activated when you turn the engine start switch to the ON position. The sensor sends electrical signals to the display module which then provides the operator with audible signals and visual signals. The display module attempts to simulate the load chart for the machine.

The electrical signal that is sent from the sensor to the display module is proportional to the strain that is applied to the sensor. The sensor is subject to the same strains that are applied to the rear axle. These strains depend on the weight of the load that is carried on the work tool. These strains also depend on the amount of boom extension.
