PROBLEM

The existing setscrews can be too short on certain 3508B, 3512B, and 3516B gensets. If the existing setscrews fail it can cause the fan to fall off its shaft while the genset is being moved, damaging the radiator and other components of the cooling system. If fan slides towards the engine during operation of the genset, the fan blade mounting bolts may come in contact with the beam that supports the fan shaft.

PRIORITY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR INSPECTING AND POSSIBLY REPLACING THE SETSCREWS THAT HOLD THE RADIATOR FAN ONTO THE DRIVE ASSEMBLY SHAFT ON CERTAIN 3508B, 3512B, AND 3516B GENSETS

MODELS INVOLVED - 3508B, 3512B, and 3516B Gensets

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

The fan setscrews need to be inspected and possibly replaced on certain 3512B and 3516 gensets. The existing setscrews can be too short. If the existing setscrews fail it can cause the fan to fall of its shaft while the genset is being moved, damaging the radiator and other components of the cooling system. If fan slides towards the engine, during operation of the genset, the fan blade mounting bolts may come in contact with the beam that supports the fan shaft. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 11Nov2008 when scheduling this service.

We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.

Image1.1.1

1. Disable unit from starting, by enabling the E-Stop and removing the battery cables from the battery.

2. Remove upper right fan guard.

3. Reach through the fan and remove 2 set screws ( 1/4 " hex head). Do not reuse the two set screws.

4. Apply loctite 7649 to clean threads of 2 new 4B-1771 Set Screws.

5. Apply 2-3 drops of red loctite 262 to each set screw and install back into fan. Make sure that the fan is flush with the end of the drive shaft before tightening the set screws.

6. Tighten the set screws to a torque of 52 +/- 3 lb ft (71 +/- 4 Nm).
