Description of Change: A new valve is now used to control the torque converter lockup clutch.
Adaptable To: The new 183-2047 Modulating Valve is a direct replacement for the former 121-4298 Modulating Valve. The 183-2047 Modulating Valve is effective with 992G (S/N: ADZ128-UP) and 994D (S/N: 3TZ261-UP) Wheel Loaders. The 183-2047 Modulating Valve is also effective with 854G (S/N: AMP274-UP) Wheel Tractors and 24H (S/N: 7KK79-UP) Motor Graders. The 183-2047 Modulating Valve is adaptable to first production of the listed machines.
Note: The 183-2047 Modulating Valve is also applicable to 994 (S/N: 9YF1-UP) Wheel Loaders with the STIC steering control.

- Remove the former valve by removing the two bolts on top of the former valve.
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Install the new 183-2047 Modulating Valve. Use the bolts that were removed in Step 2. Use a 8S-0768 O-Ring Seal for the 994 and 994D Wheel Loaders and 24H Motor Grader. Use a 6D-7889 O-Ring Seal for the 992G Wheel Loader and 854G Wheel Tractor.
- Refer to Service Manual module, SENR1327, "Testing and Adjusting, 992G Wheel Loader and 854G Wheel Tractor Power Train", "Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Pressure - Test" for instruction on the testing of the 183-2047 Modulating Valve on the 992G Wheel Loader and the 854G Wheel Tractor.
Refer to Service Manual module, RENR2506, "Testing and Adjusting, 994D Wheel Loader Power Train", "Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Pressure - Test" for instruction on the testing of the 183-2047 Modulating Valve on the 994D Wheel Loader.
Refer to Service Manual module, SENR1417, "Testing and Adjusting, 24H Motor Grader Power Train", "Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Pressure - Test" for instruction on the testing of the 183-2047 Modulating Valve on the 24H Motor Grader.
- Test the operation of the machine.
