Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine. To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps. Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on. |
- Position the felling head on Tooling (B) . Adjust Tooling (B) in order to keep the felling head level. Attach the felling head to the machine. Place the felling head in a vertical position.

- Ensure that you block the wheels or the tracks of the machine.
- Lower temperature of bearing cup (5) .
Illustration 2 | g01256107 |
- Use Tooling (G) to drive bearing cup (5) into bearing housing (9) .
- Pass a 0.051 mm (0.002 inch) feeler gauge around bearing cup (5) and bearing housing (9) . If the gauge will fit between bearing cup (5) and bearing housing (9) , the cup is not seated properly. Repeat Step 4 until bearing cup (5) is properly seated.
- Install bearing cup (7) into bearing housing (9) by repeating Step 3 through Step 5.
- Install lip seal (2) into bearing housing (9) .

- Raise the temperature of collar (10) to 83° C (180° F). Install collar (10) onto output shaft (6) with the step upward.
Illustration 4 | g01220397 |
- Allow collar (10) to cool for 3 to 5 minutes. Use suitable tooling to seat collar (10) onto output shaft (6) by striking the top of the collar (10) 4 times at 90 degree intervals.
- Raise the temperature of bearing cone (8) to 83° C (180° F). Install bearing cone (8) onto output shaft (6) . Allow bearing cone (8) to cool for 3 to 5 minutes. Use suitable tooling to seat bearing cone (8) against collar (10) .
- Pack bearing cone (8) with Tooling (D) with a pointed grease gun nozzle.
- Protect the output shaft threads and install output shaft (6) until lower bearing cone (8) seats to bearing cup (7) . Use Tooling (C) in order to install the output shaft.
Note: Leave Tooling (C) in place until locknut (3) is installed onto output shaft (6) .
Illustration 5 | g00850813 |
- Raise the temperature of bearing cone (4) to 83° C (180° F). Install bearing cone (4) onto output shaft (6) . Use the proper bearing driver in order to seat bearing cone (4) onto output shaft (6) .

- Apply Tooling (E) to the threads of locknut (3) . Use Tooling (A) to install locknut (3) onto output shaft (6) . Tighten locknut (3) to a torque of 490 N·m (360 lb ft).
Note: Locknut (3) uses left-hand threads.
- Rotate the disc of the saw by 360 degrees in the clockwise direction and in the counterclockwise direction. Torque locknut (3) again to 490 N·m (360 lb ft). This procedure will ensure that all of the bearings are seated properly.
- Use Tooling (A) in order to turn locknut (3) . Adjust locknut (3) by 1/32 of a turn clockwise in order to obtain the desired cold bearing end play of 0.127 to 0.254 mm (0.0050 to 0.0100 inch).
Note: The end play cannot be measured unless the output shaft is pressed downward in order to move the bearing cone relative to the shaft. It is not necessary to press the shaft downward because normal operating loads will cause this movement in order to create the desired end play.

Note: Each graduation on Tooling (A) represents 1/32 of a turn.
- Apply Tooling (F) to the threads of four bolts (1) prior to assembly.
Illustration 9 | g01040018 |
- Install four bolts (1) in the locknut. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 100 ± 10 N·m (74 ± 7 lb ft).
- Remove Tooling (A) .
- Remove Tooling (B) . Remove Tooling (C) .
ReferenceFor more information about installing the output shaft, refer to Specifications, System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Output Shaft".
End By:
- Install the piston motor into the felling head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Piston Motor (Disc Saw) - Install".
- Install the disc saw. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Disc Saw - Install".
