Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the installation procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: The machine must be properly supported to install the wheels. See Operation and Maintenance, "Jacking / Blocking Locations".

  1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (15). Install bearing cup (15) while the bearing cup is still cold.

  2. Position brake rotor (14) onto wheel (1). Refer to the position marks from the removal procedure.

  3. Do not reuse bolts (13).

  4. Install bolts (13). Tighten bolts (13) in a pattern to a torque of 120 ± 20 N·m (89 ± 15 lb ft). Loosen one of bolt (13) to a torque of zero. Tighten one of bolt (13) to a torque of 120 ± 20 N·m (89 ± 15 lb ft) and turn the bolt an additional 120° ± 10°.

  5. Repeat Step 4 for the adjacent bolts until all of bolts (13) have been torqued.

  6. Use Tooling (B) to install Duo-Cone seal (6) in the seal seat of wheel (1). Refer toSpecial Instruction, "Assembly and Installation of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals".

Note: Inspect the Duo-Cone seals to verify that the Duo-Cone seals have not been damaged during the installation and remain clean and dry.

  10. Install retainer (9A).

    Illustration 7g01202328

  11. Use Tooling (E) to install Duo-Cone seal (9) into the retainer (9A). Refer toSpecial Instruction, "Assembly and Installation of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals". Install bearing cone (8) onto spindle (6). The weight of spindle (6) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

Note: Inspect the Duo-Cone seals to verify that the Duo-Cone seals have not been damaged during the installation and remain clean and dry.

  12. Install O-ring seal (7) onto spindle (6).

    Illustration 9g01202162

  13. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to install wheel (1) onto spindle (6). The weight of wheel (1) is approximately 125 kg (276 lb).

    Illustration 10g01197974

  14. Use Tooling (C) to measure the thickness of retainer (4) at the three small holes in the retainer. Record the average of the three measurements.

  15. Position retainer (4) onto spindle (6). Install three bolts into the holes beside the three small holes that were used for the measurements in Step 14. Tighten the three bolts to a torque of 100 N·m (75 lb ft). Turn wheel (1) by several revolutions and tighten the three bolts to a torque of 100 N·m (75 lb ft).

  16. Loosen the three bolts. Tighten the three bolts again to a torque of 25 N·m (18 lb ft). Turn wheel (1) by several revolutions. Repeat this procedure until the torque on bolts (3) remains at 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Illustration 11g01197970

  17. Use Tooling (D) to take three measurements of the distance to the end of spindle (6) through the three small holes. Record the average of the three measurements.

  18. Subtract the average measurement that was found in Step 14 from the average measurement that was found in Step 17. Record the measurement as the average gap between the end of the spindle and the retainer.

  19. Remove the three bolts.

    Illustration 12g01197963

  20. The thickness of shims (5) must be equal to the gap that was determined in Step 18 plus 0.075 ± 0.025 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 inch).

    Illustration 13g01197955

  21. Install shims (5), retainer (4), and bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 60 ± 12 N·m (45 ± 9 lb ft) and then turn the bolts 120° ± 10° . Do not reuse the bolts.

    Illustration 14g01197699

  22. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to position wheel (1) onto the axle. The weight of wheel (1) is approximately 168 kg (371 lb).

  23. Install the brake caliper assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Install".

End By:

  1. Install the final drive planet carriers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install".

  2. Install the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Install".
