Wheel Bearings and Duo-Cone Seals - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove".
  2. Remove the final drive planet carriers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to wheel (1) . The weight of wheel (1) is approximately 168 kg (371 lb).

  1. Remove the brake caliper assemblies (2) . Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Remove".

  1. Remove wheel (1) from the axle.

  1. Remove bolts (3) , retainer (4) , and shims (5) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device in order to remove wheel (1) from spindle (6) . The weight of wheel (1) is approximately 125 kg (276 lb).

  1. Remove O-ring seal (7) from spindle (6) .

  1. Remove bearing cone (8) from spindle (6) . Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Duo-Cone seal (9) . The weight of spindle (6) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  1. Remove retainer (9A) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (9B) .

  1. Use two people in order to remove hub (10) . The weight of hub (10) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb).

  1. Remove bearing cone (11) and remove bearing cup (12) from wheel (1) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Duo-Cone seal (9) from wheel (1) .

  1. Remove bolts (13) and remove brake rotor (14) from wheel (1) .

    Note: Mark the position of the brake rotor for installation purposes.

  1. Remove bearing cup (15) .
