Lubricant Viscosities

Usage:

HH45 2JZ
The proper viscosity grade is determined by the minimum outside temperature when the machine is started. The proper viscosity grade is also determined by the maximum outside temperature while the machine is operated. Use the "Min" column on the table in order to determine the viscosity grade that is required for you to start a cold machine and operate a cold machine. Use the "Max" column on the table to select the viscosity grade for operating the machine at the highest temperature that is anticipated. Use the highest viscosity of oil that is allowed for the ambient temperature condition of your machine.

Consult your dealer if additional information is needed.

Lubrication Specification for the Saw Chain

Note: Requirements for biodegradable oil will vary with local regulations. Consult the nearest Caterpillar dealer for additional information.

Select a lubricant that is required for your expected ambient temperature. The lubricant should be formulated to provide good lubricity. Good lubricity eliminates sticking of moving parts and the buildup of dirt. The lubricant should be resistant to oxidation.

The lubricant must be tacky and adhesive. This will allow the oil to stay on the saw chain. Otherwise, oil will not stay on the saw chain when you operate the saw chain.

Select a lubricant with the following characteristics for your expected ambient temperature.

  • Good lubricity and resistance to oxidation

  • High viscosity index

  • Tacky

  • Adhesive
