Start By:

  1. Drain the oil from the front axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential Oil - Change".

  2. Remove both front wheels. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel and Tire - Remove and Install".

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Install suitable cribbing on both sides of the machine between the chassis and the rear axle.

  2. Remove split pin (2) and nut (3). Use tool (C) to release tie rod (4) from the steering case of axle hub (1).

  3. Install tool (A) in order to support the axle hub (1). The weight of the axle hub is 76 kg (170 lb).

  4. Remove six bolts (5) and the washers. Install two M12 x 1.75 forcing bolts (7) and force out lower pin (6).

  5. Remove six bolts (8), the washers and the mounting bracket (9) for the fender. Install two M12 x 1.75 forcing bolts (10) and force out upper pin (11). Remove upper pin (11) and shims (12).

  6. Use a second person to steady axle hub (1) while you carefully withdraw the axle hub from the axle.

  7. Remove the two dust seals for each side of the axle.

      Dust seal (14) is installed on all rear axles except the TH103. Dust seal (14) is also installed on all fixed front axles.

    1. Remove two dust seals (14) for each steering case (13) before you carry out step 6.

      Dust seal (15) is installed on the TH103 rear axle. Dust seal (15) is also installed on all the front oscillating axles.

    2. Remove one rubber seal (15) from pin (6) and pin (11).

  8. Use tool (B), tool (E) and a suitable press in order to remove one bearing cone (16) from each pin.

  9. Use tool (D) in order to remove two bearing cups (17) from the axle housing.
