Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Accidental movement of controls while the engine is running can cause sudden machine movement. Do not make any adjustments to the control linkage with the engine running unless required. Allow only approved personnel on the machine. Keep other personnel off the machine and in clear view of the service personnel. |
Procedure for Adjustment of Parking Brake

Linkage for Parking Brake (1) Parking brake lever (2) Rod (3) Rod assembly (4) Rod assembly (5) Lever |
Torque for all of the 3/8 inch locknuts (jam nuts) that hold the rod ends in place on the rods. ... 14 ± 4 N·m (10 ± 3 lb ft)
Torque for all of the 3/8 inch locknuts on the ball studs for the rod ends ... 25 ± 7 N·m (18 ± 5 lb ft)
Note: All rod assembly measurements must be made in a straight line between the centerlines of the rod end mounting holes.
(3) Assembled length of rod assembly ... 240 ± 1.5 mm (9.45 ± 0.06 inch)
- While parking brake lever (1) is in the ON position, adjust rod (2) until the end fits freely in lever (1). Parking brake lever (1) is shown in the ON position in Illustration 1.
- Tighten the locknut on rod (2) to a torque of 5 ± 0.5 N·m (4 ± 0.5 lb ft).
- Adjust rod assembly (3) to the specified length. Install the adjusted rod assembly.
Note: Do not change the length of rod assembly (3) in further adjustments.
- Disconnect rod assembly (4) at the upper end of the rod assembly.
- Pull up on lever (5) until lever (5) is at the highest point. When you fully depress the lever, the lever should go into the detent position. Do not stretch the spring canister on rod (4), if equipped. Adjust the length of rod assembly (4) until the pin fits freely through upper rod end (5). Then turn down upper rod end (5) by two full turns. This will shorten the rod. Then install rod assembly (4) .
- In order to check the parking brake adjustment, install a 0 to 4000 kPa (0 to 600 psi) pressure gauge on either right brake pressure tap (B) or left brake pressure tap (A) .

Left and Right Brake Pressure Taps (A) Left brake (B) Right brake |
- Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.
- While parking brake lever (1) is in the brake ON position, the pressure gauge must read less than 30 kPa (44 psi). (The parking brake lever is down in the ON position.) If the pressure is not less than 30 kPa (44 psi), make rod assembly (4) shorter. Again, check the pressure.
- Rotate parking brake lever (1) to the brake OFF position. (The parking brake lever is up in the OFF position.) The pressure gauge must read 2750 ± 150 kPa (400 ± 22 psi). If the pressure reading is low, make rod assembly (4) longer. Again, check the pressure.
- After adjusting the linkage in Steps 8 and 9, attach a 0 to 4000 kPa (0 to 600 psi) gauge to P1 pressure tap (C) on the transmission. While the engine is running a low idle, move the parking brake lever from the brake ON position to the brake OFF position. Move the lever through the lever's full travel in each direction. The P1 pressure should read the same value when the parking brake is in the ON position or the OFF position.

(C) P1 Pressure Tap |
- If the P1 pressure in the ON position is different from the P1 pressure in the OFF position, the parking brake valve is leaking oil. The linkage must be adjusted by using the following procedure:
- Lengthen rod assembly (4) if P1 with the parking brake OFF is less than P1 with the parking brake ON.
- Shorten rod assembly (4) if P1 with the parking brake ON is less than P1 with the parking brake OFF.
- If linkage adjustments are made in Step 11, repeat the pressure checks in Steps 8, 9, and 10. Keep adjusting the pressures until the correct pressures are obtained.
