Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: This procedure requires the machine to be parked on a level surface.

Oil level dipstick (1) and oil filler cap (2) for the transmission oil are located on the right side of the machine under the access cover.
- Install the steering frame locks.
- Open the access cover in order to expose oil level dipstick (1) and oil filler cap (2) .
- Measure the transmission oil level with oil level dipstick (1) .
Note: The oil level dipstick is marked "COLD SAFE START"on one side. The oil level dipstick is marked "FULL HOT LOW IDLE" on the other side.
- The side of the oil level dipstick that is marked "FULL HOT LOW IDLE" indicates the correct transmission oil level.
Run the engine at low idle for five minutes before you check the oil level. It is most important to check the oil level after a long haul at speed. The oil, which will be at operating temperature, must be allowed to stabilize before you check the oil level.

- Maintain the oil level to the "FULL" side of the shaded area on the dipstick. The tank is full when the oil is at this level.
If necessary, add oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities".

- Clean up oil spills.
- Close the access cover and remove the steering frame locks.
