Description of Change: New flash files for the ECM and a new EPROM chip for the CAT ID are now available. The new flash files correct several problems with the software. The new flash files also add new features.

A description of the changes to the software for the CAT ID is included below.

Fuel Correction Factor - The total for "Lifetime Fuel" can be programmed to a more appropriate value.

Calculation of the Fuel - The "Lifetime Total" of the burnt fuel is recorded correctly. Previously, the fuel that was used was recorded at two times the actual rate. This caused errors in the calculation of other parameters that were related to the usage of the fuel.

Removal of Idle Shutdown Timer - All capability of the idle shutdown timer has been removed from the ECM and from the screens on the display of the CAT ID.

The 145-0145 Monitor Electronic Control Module or 164-5766 Monitor Electronic Control Module can be changed into a 188-2928 Monitor Electronic Control Module if you remove the corresponding Display EPROM Control:

You must install the new 171-2087 Display EPROM Control (Cat ID-English/Spanish).

The 164-5767 Monitor Electronic Control Module or 171-2090 Monitor Electronic Control Module can be changed into a 187-1599 Monitor Electronic Control Module if you remove the corresponding Display EPROM Control:

  • 164-5765 Display EPROM Control

  • 171-2088 Display EPROM Control

You must install the new 187-1600 Display EPROM Control (Cat ID-English/German).

Procedure 1

If your machine only requires the new flash file, this is the procedure to program the ECM and the procedure to update the "Fuel Rate Scaling".

Note: When you flash the new software, the screen of the CAT ID will display "Application Not Recognized". This condition is normal.

  1. Use Electronic Technician, JERD2124 Version 3.0 or higher in order to flash the ECM of the engine with the appropriate software for the machine model. A 7X-1700 Communication Adapter and proper connecting cables are required. Additional service information can be found in the references that are listed.

Note: Because of the errors with the original software of the ECM, all the parameters of the machine that are related to the fuel consumption may not be accurate. Complete the following steps in order to eliminate errors or minimize the errors.

  1. Obtain the passwords from the factory in order to reprogram the value for "Lifetime Fuel Consumption". You will need to provide the following information:

    • "Service Tool Serial Number"

    • "Engine Serial Number"

    • "ECM Serial Number"

    • "Total Tattletale Count"

    • "Reason Code"

  1. Determine if the "Fuel Rate Scaling" for the ECM has been programmed by checking the tattletale for the "Fuel Rate Scaling" on the configuration screen.

  1. If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" has been programmed, reset the factor to "0". Reset the value of the "Total Fuel" that is consumed to 0.67 (67%) of the existing number. You also need to reset the value of the "Total Max Fuel" to .67 (67 %) of the existing number. This will require the previously obtained factory passwords. All parameters of output in the future that are related to the fuel consumption will be accurate. This does not include "Lifetime Totals". The "Lifetime Totals" that is related to fuel consumption will not be accurate. The "Lifetime Accuracy" will improve as more of the fuel is consumed by the engine of the machine.

Note: If the electronic display module of the CAT ID is installed in the cab of the machine at a later time, the following information from the ECM will need to be reset: "Rolling Totals", "Last Field Totals" and "Current Field Totals". In order to reset the values, use the input keys of the display. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0193, "Caterpillar Information Display".

Note: You must reset the corresponding parameters of software if you cannot reset the values of the following parameters at the screen of the CAT ID: "Rolling Totals" and "Field Totals". Use the Electronic Technician. Go to the "Configuration/Service Screen". Change the "Rolling Totals Manual Reset Status" from "Enable" to "Disable". Repeat the step with the "Field Totals Manual Reset Status".

Procedure 2

If your machine requires the new flash file and the new EPROM, this is the procedure to program the ECM and the procedure to update the "Fuel Rate Scaling".

Note: When you flash the new software, the screen of the CAT ID will display "Application Not Recognized". This condition is normal.

Your machine may have the earlier model of the CAT ID. The following part numbers go together as a matched set:

The latest CAT ID is 188-2928 Monitor Electronic Control Module. If your machine has one of the earlier displays, the EPROM chip must be changed with the software update.

  1. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0193, "Caterpillar Information Display" for the proper procedures for installation and inspection of the EPROM.

  1. Take note of any desired, existing data of the electronic display. This does not include "Lifetime Totals". Be aware that the accuracy of the value for the fuel is questionable. This data will be erased during the next steps. Complete Step 4 and Step 5 using the appropriate input keys of the electronic display unit. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0193, "Caterpillar Information Display".

  1. Reset the "Rolling Totals" values.

  1. Reset the "Current Field Totals" values TWICE. Resetting the totals will return the values to zero for the "Current Field Totals" and the values for the "Last Field Totals". Complete Steps 6 through Steps 9 by using the Electronic Technician.

  1. Obtain the passwords from the factory in order to reprogram the value for "lifetime fuel consumption". You will need to provide the following information:

    • "Service Tool Serial Number"

    • "Engine Serial Number"

    • "ECM Serial Number"

    • "Total Tattletale Count"

    • "Reason Code"

  1. Determine if the "Fuel Rate Scaling" for the ECM has been programmed by checking the tattletale for the "Fuel Rate Scaling Factor" on the configuration screen.

  1. If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" has not been programmed, reset the factor to "0". Go to the "Information/Current Totals Screen". Reset the value of the "Total Fuel" that is consumed to 0.50 (50%) of the existing number. You also need to reset the "Total Max Fuel" to .50 (50%) of the existing number. This will require the previously obtained factory passwords. All parameters of output in the future will be accurate. This includes the "Lifetime Totals".

  1. If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" has been programmed, reset the factor to "0". Reset the value of the "Total Fuel" that is consumed to 0.67 (67%) of the existing number. You also need to reset the "Total Max Fuel" to .67 (67%) of the existing number.
