(6) Axle housing

(7) Universal joint shaft

(8) Pressure plate

(9) Pusher

(10) Cover

(11) Lever

Cover (10) is located between axle housing (1) and axle housing (6). The brake disc packs are located between the cover and axle housing (6) .

Brake discs (4) are splined to universal joint shaft (7) in order to allow the brake discs to rotate with the shaft. Grooves on each side of brake discs (4) allow lubricating oil from the differential to flow through the brake disc pack for cooling purposes. Brake discs (5) are smooth on each side. The lugs which are located around the outside circumference of brake discs (5) are located in the slots of axle housing (6) in order to prevent brake discs (5) from rotating.

The lugs which are around the outside circumference of pressure plate (8) are also located in the slots of axle housing (6). Two pushers (9) are screwed into the pressure plate.

Lever (11) is cranked and slots are located in the lever in order to engage the pushers. One end of the lever is located in a hole at the bottom of the cover and the other end of the lever is supported by flange (2) at the top of the cover. Lever (3) is splined to lever (11). When lever (3) is turned by the inner cable for the parking brake, lever (11) pivots in order to move the pushers and the pressure plate against the brake disc pack. The brake discs which are splined to the universal joint shaft are forced against the brake discs which are fixed in order to prevent the shaft from rotating.

Location of Pistons (Service Brake System)

(12) Piston

(13) Annular chamber

Four pistons (12) are located in cover (10). The port for the service brake oil line is located on top of axle housing (1). The port connects to annular chamber (13) which is connected to the piston bores.

When the brake pedal is pressed, oil pressure is transmitted through the annular chamber which forces the piston against the pressure plate. The brake discs which are splined to the universal joint shaft are forced against the brake discs which are fixed in order to prevent the shaft from rotating.

When the brake pedal is released, oil pressure is relieved in the annular chamber which allows the piston to move away from the pressure plate. The force against the brake disc pack is relieved and the brake discs which are splined to the universal joint shaft are free to rotate with the shaft.
