Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change

Usage:

D350E II 2XW

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.

Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

----------------------

NOTICE

Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material found in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications" section. Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling systems components.

NOTICE

Mixing ELC with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specifications for pre-mixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Caterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling systems components.

If ELC cooling system contamination occurs see the topic ELC Cooling System Contamination of this operation and maintenance manual.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

If the Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC) is dirty or if you observe any foaming in the cooling system, drain the coolant before the recommended interval.

If the coolant in the machine is changed to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Extended Life Coolant (ELC) Cooling System Maintenance".

  1. Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool.

  1. Remove two bolts (2) and remove access cover (3) .

  1. Open the drain valve for the radiator. The drain valve is located at the base of the radiator. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is transparent.

  1. Close the drain valve.

  1. Reinstall the access panel.

  1. Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities".

  1. Start the engine. Operate the engine without the pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.

  1. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (.5 inches) of the bottom of the filler pipe.

  1. Inspect the gasket of the cooling system pressure cap. If the gasket is damaged, replace the gasket.

  1. Reinstall pressure cap (1) .

  1. Stop the engine.
