Fuel Tank and Hood - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".
  2. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Cleaner - Remove and Install".

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Disconnect the battery.

  1. Remove two bolts (1), the two washers and cover (2) from the fuel tank.

  1. Remove nut (4) and the washer.

  1. Remove wire assembly (5) and cable assembly (3) from the bottom of starter motor (6) in order to move the cable assembly out of the way.

  1. Turn two valves (7) to the off position.

  1. Connect a piece of tube to valve (8) and open the valve. Drain the fuel from the tank into a suitable container.

  1. Remove all cable straps (9) that connect the lines to the fuel tank.

  1. Move the lines out of the way. Move cable assembly (3) out of the way.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (12) and hose clamp (14). Disconnect fuel line (11) and fuel line (13) .

  1. Disconnect quick coupler (10) and remove the cable straps from the back of the fuel tank.

  1. Remove two nuts (16) and the two washers. Remove air conditioning dryer (17) from the bracket.

  1. Remove cable strap (15) in order to disconnect the air conditioning line from the fuel tank.

  1. Remove the two bolts and the two washers (not shown) from starter relay (18). Remove the starter relay from the bracket.

  1. Remove boot (19) from the terminal. Remove nut (22), washer (23) and cable assembly (20) from stud (21) .

  1. Remove two bolts (24) and remove cooler bypass valve (25) from the fuel tank.

  1. Disconnect quick coupler (26), (27) and (28) on the top of the fuel tank. Move the wiring harness out of the way.

  1. Remove four bolts (29) and the washers. Remove shield (30) from bracket (31) .

  1. Loosen clamp (33). Loosen the two nuts on clamp (34) and slide exhaust tube assembly (32) toward the cab.

  1. Remove the two nuts, the two washers and two bolts (37). Remove two clamps (35), tube assembly (36), the two clamps, exhaust tube assembly (32) and tube (38) from the bracket.

  1. Remove two bolts (40), the two washers and two clips (39) that hold dust ejector tube (41) to the bottom of the fuel tank.

  1. Remove bolt (44) and the washer from clamp (43) that holds aftercooler tube (42) to the fuel tank.

  1. Remove cable strap (45) from hose (46) .

  1. Remove cable straps (47) from the bracket on fuel tank (48) that holds the hoses.

  1. Use Tool (A) (not shown) and straps to support fuel tank (48) and hood (49) .

  1. Use Tool (B) and a strap to balance the fuel tank and the hood, as shown.

  1. Remove two bolts (50) and the two washers from bracket (31) on each side of the machine.

  1. Remove two bolts (51) and the washers from each side of the support on the bottom of fuel tank (48) .

    Note: If the machine is equipped with an auxiliary fuel tank, use Step 28 and Step 29.

  1. Raise the fuel tank to a few inches.

  1. Loosen clamp (52) and remove hose (53) to the auxiliary fuel tank.

  1. Remove the fuel tank and the hood.
