Steering Accumulator - Disassemble

Start By:

  1. Remove the steering accumulator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Accumulator - Remove".

    Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

  1. Place accumulator (1) onto a suitable work bench.

    Note: Use a wood block in order to prevent accumulator (1) from rolling.

  2. Remove cover (2) from accumulator (1).

  3. Remove seal (5) and valve assembly (4) from bladder (3).

  4. Remove O-ring seal (6) and valve (8) from adapter (7).

  5. Remove nut (9) from bladder (3).

  6. Use Tool (A) in order to remove locknut (10) from plug (12). Remove spacer (11) from plug (12).

  7. Push bladder (3) through plug (12) into accumulator (1).

  8. Push plug (12) into accumulator (1).

  9. Remove backup ring (13), O-ring seal (14) and washer (15) from accumulator (1).

  10. Reach into accumulator (1) in order to grab ring (16). Fold ring (16) in half in order to remove ring (16) from accumulator (1).

  11. Reach into accumulator (1) in order to grab plug (12). Remove plug (12) from accumulator (1).

  12. Reach into accumulator (1) in order to grab bladder (3). Pull bladder (3 ) out of accumulator (1) far enough in order to install nut (9). Use nut (9) as a handle in order to assist in removing bladder (3) from accumulator (1).

  13. Use Tool (A) (not shown) in order to remove locknut (17) and spacer (19) from plug (18).

  14. Push plug (18) into accumulator (1).

  15. Remove backup ring (20), O-ring seal (21) and washer (22) from accumulator (1).

  16. Reach into accumulator (1) in order to grab ring (23). Fold ring (23) in half in order to remove ring (23) from accumulator (1).

  17. Reach into accumulator (1) in order to grab plug (18). Remove plug (18) from accumulator (1).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.


  18. Remove nut (24) from poppet (25). Remove poppet (25), spring (26), and piston (27) from plug (18).
