D     138-7575     Link Bracket     2

Start By:

  1. Remove the main drive shaft.
  2. Remove the drive axles.

Note: There are two methods for removing the transmission planetary:

The first method is described in the following text: The transmission and the bevel gears are removed from the machine as a unit. Then, the bevel gears are separated from the planetary transmission. This is the easiest method and the most preferred method because you can support the weight of the transmission and the bevel gears on the rollers that are attached to the bevel gear case.

The second method is described later in this section in "Transmission - Remove". The second method is least recommended because of the additional Tooling that is necessary and the higher degree of difficulty.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the drain plug in the bottom of the transmission and bevel gear case. Drain the power train oil. Loosen the bolts that hold the cover on the suction screen in the transmission. Drain the oil from the transmission case. The total oil that is drained will be approximately 159 L (42 US gal). Install the drain plug. Tighten the bolts in the cover for the suction screen.

  1. Remove four bolts (4). Remove 17 bolts (5), the cover, and the gasket. ()

  1. Adapter (7) slides onto two sleeves with O-ring seals. Remove adapter (7) and the sleeves.

  1. Remove the bolts that hold two covers (3) in place. Remove the pins and disconnect two control cables (6) from the transmission control. Pull transmission control cables (6) out of the transmission cover and tie the controls out of the way.

  1. Remove the cover and install Tooling (B) on the transmission cover. Attach a hoist to Tooling (B) .

    NOTICE

Four bolts (8) hold the transmission cover and the bevel gear case together. Do not remove four bolts (8) .

  1. Remove 22 bolts (9) .

  1. The weight of the transmission and bevel gears is 864 kg (1900 lb). Use Tooling (C) to separate the transmission from the transmission and bevel gear case. Use the hoist and slowly pull the transmission and bevel gears from the case. The rollers that are attached to the bevel gear case support the transmission and bevel gears during removal. The rollers travel on the telescoping tube assemblies as you pull the assembly out of the case.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from not following the proper procedures.

To avoid the possibility of injury or death, follow the established procedure.

    ----------------------

    NOTICE

The transmission and bevel gear must be supported when the hoist is removed from the rear adapter [Tooling (B) ] to the link brackets on top of the transmission [Tooling (D) ]. Be sure that the support for the transmission and bevel gear is on a solid footing so that the transmission and bevel gear will not fall when the hoist is removed from Tooling (B) .

  1. Install Tooling (D) on top of the transmission case. Use a floor jack or wood blocks to support the transmission and bevel gears.

  1. Remove the hoist from Tooling (B). Attach the hoist to Tooling (D) and remove the transmission and bevel gear from the tube assemblies.

  1. Remove the O-ring seal that goes around the outer diameter of the transmission case. Remove four O-ring seals (10) and (11) from the transmission and bevel gear case.
