Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: Before you replace the secondary fuel filter, the primary fuel filter must be replaced. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Primary Filter - Clean/Inspect/Replace".
- Park the machine on a level surface. Ensure that the parking brake is fully engaged. Lower the dump body and stop the engine.
- Raise the hood.
- Use a strap wrench and remove the secondary fuel filter. Discard the secondary fuel filter properly.

- Clean the fuel filter base. Ensure that all of the old filter base gasket is removed.
- Coat the new filter base gasket for the new secondary fuel filter with clean diesel fuel prior to installation.
- Install the new secondary fuel filter by hand. Do not use a tool for installation of the secondary fuel filter. When the new filter base gasket contacts the fuel filter base, tighten the secondary fuel filter by an additional 270°.
Rotation index marks are positioned on the secondary fuel filter at 90° intervals. Use the rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the secondary fuel filter.
- Prime the fuel system.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Lower the hood.
