Service and Parking Brake (Rear) - Remove

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the wheel bearings and Duo-Cone seals. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Bearings and Duo-Cone Seals - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the hydraulic oil from the hoist and brake hydraulic tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hoist and Brake Tank - Change". The capacity of the tank is 132 L (35 US gal).

  2. Position a lifting sling around brake housing (1), as shown. Secure the lifting sling to a suitable hoist. Remove the 18 bolts that fasten brake housing (1) to axle housing assembly (2). Remove the three nuts that fasten brake housing (1) to axle housing assembly (2). Remove brake housing (1) from axle housing assembly (2). The weight of brake housing (1) is 248 kg (547 lb).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Possible bodily injury may occur when the twelve bolts are removed from the axle housing.

    The support and piston assembly is free to fall from the axle housing if not supported correctly.

    Fasten a lifting sling and hoist to the support and piston assembly before removing the twelve bolts on the axle housing.

  3. Position a lifting sling around the housing support and piston (3), as shown. Secure the lifting sling to a suitable hoist. Remove the 12 bolts that fasten the housing support and piston assembly (3) to axle housing assembly (2).

  4. Remove six O-ring seals (4) and O-ring seal (5) from axle housing assembly (2).

  5. Remove 18 spring assemblies (6) from the housing support and piston assembly (3). Remove the housing support and piston assembly (3) from axle housing assembly (2). The weight of the housing support and piston assembly (3) is 68 kg (149.9 lb).
