Inspect Belt Tension
Show/hide table
Illustration 1 | g00318987 |
- Raise the hood in order to access the alternator belt.
Note: See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Compartment Hood - Raise/Lower" .
- Inspect the condition of the belt. Replace any belt that is excessively worn.
- In order to check the belt tension, apply 110 N (25 lb) of force midway between the pulleys. Correctly adjusted belts will deflect 13 to 19 mm (.5 to .75 inch) .
- If the belt deflection is not correct, adjust the belt.
Adjust Belt Tension

Illustration 2 | g00321864 |
- Loosen pivot bolt (1) and adjustment bolt (2) .
- Rotate the alternator in order to adjust belt tension. Use a suitable pry bar at the end of the alternator with the pulley in order to rotate the alternator.
- Maintain tension on the belt while you tighten adjustment bolt (2) . Then, tighten pivot bolt (1) .
- Measure the belt tension. If the belt deflection is not correct, repeat this procedure.
