Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)

Usage:

793B 1HL
The Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) consists of an action alarm, an action light and a monitoring panel. Individual alert indicators for each machine system are listed on the panel.

The EMS is designed to alert the operator of an immediate problem in one or more of the machine systems that are covered.

EMS Functional Test

To ensure the proper operation of the EMS, check the system daily.

In order to supply electrical power to the operator's compartment for the EMS, the battery disconnect switch must be in the ON position and the engine start switch key must be in the ON position.

Panel Test Switch - While the engine is stopped, move the switch to the TEST position and HOLD. All of the alert indicators should come on and the action light should flash until the switch is released. Release the switch. The switch will return to the OFF position.

If any of the alert indicators or the action lights do not come on, the electrical system should be checked and all of the necessary repairs should be made before the engine is started.

If all of the alert indicators and the action lights came on, start the engine. Repeat the panel test while the engine is operating. All of the alert indicators and the action lights should come on again. The action alarm should also sound.

If any of the alert indicators or the action lights do not come on or the action alarm does not sound, stop the engine. If the alert indicators did not come on for any electrical systems or any machine systems, those systems must be inspected. Perform all the necessary repairs before the engine is started again.

EMS Warning Categories

The EMS provides three warning categories. The first category requires only operator awareness. The second warning category needs operator response. The third warning category requires immediate safe shutdown of the machine. The following topics group the machine systems by EMS warning categories.

Warning Category 1

In this category, only the alert indicator will come on. The alert indicator informs the operator that a machine system needs attention. The operator should not be endangered as a result of the malfunction of these systems. Also, the machine components should not be damaged.

Brake On (7) - This symbol indicates that the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position and either one or both of the following conditions exists:

  • The parking brake is engaged.

  • One of the brake master cylinders has a brake overstroke condition.

This alert indicator should come on during start-up. The alert indicator should go out when the parking brake is released, but only if one of the master cylinders does not have a brake overstroke condition. Brake overstroke condition is a Warning Category 3.

Note: The brake system air pressure must be above 690 kPa (100 psi) in order to release the parking brake.

If the alert indicator continues to flash after releasing the parking brake, determine the cause before operating the machine.

Alternator (8) - This symbol indicates that the alternator is malfunctioning. If this alert indicator comes on, move the truck to a convenient place in order to park the machine and stop the engine. Investigate the cause and report the problem.

Fuel Filter (9) - This symbol indicates that the fuel filters are plugged and the filters should be serviced. If this alert indicator comes on during operation, the filters should be serviced on the same day.

Warning Category 2

In this category, the EMS panel indicator and the action light will come on. The EMS panel indicator requires a change in machine operation. Move the truck to a convenient place in order to park the machine and stop the engine. Investigate the cause of the alert indicator and report the problem immediately.

Engine Coolant Temperature (1) - This symbol indicates excessive coolant temperature. If this alert indicator comes on, move the truck to a convenient place in order to park the machine and stop the engine. Investigate the cause. The temperature should be reduced approximately 15 to 20°C (27 to 36°F) before the alert indicator will go out. Do not operate the machine if the alert indicator and action light remain on.

Transmission, Torque Converter and Hoist Filtering System (5) - This symbol indicates that the filters should be changed and the filters should be checked for metal particles. If this alert indicator comes on, move the truck to a convenient place in order to park the machine and stop the engine.

Brake Air Pressure (4) - This symbol indicates low air pressure to the brakes. When this alert indicator comes on, Engage the secondary brake and move the lever downward. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause. Do not operate the machine until the cause has been corrected.

Note: This type of indication occurs when the machine is moving less than 8 km/h (5 mph).

Brake Oil Temperature (6) - This symbol indicates excessive brake oil temperature. If the alert indicator comes on, reduce the load on the engine, or slow the retarding speed. Move the truck to a convenient place in order to park the machine and keep the engine operating. Move the retarder lever completely downward in order to cool the oil.

Warning Category 3

In this category, the alert indicator and the action light should come on and the action alarm should sound. The alert indicator requires immediate safe shutdown of operation in order to prevent possible injury to the operator and/or severe damage to the system and the machine.

Coolant Flow (2) - This symbol indicates that there is no coolant flow to the engine. If this alert indicator comes on, the action light should flash and the action alarm should sound. Safely stop the engine and investigate the cause. Do not operate the machine until the cause has been corrected.

Engine Oil Pressure (3) - This symbol indicates low oil pressure. If this alert indicator comes on, the action alarm should sound and the action light should flash. Immediately stop the machine in a safe manner. Stop the engine and investigate the cause. Do not operate the machine until the cause has been corrected. If this alert indicator comes on, without the alarm, safely stop the engine and investigate the cause.

Brake Air Pressure (4) - This symbol indicates low air pressure to the brakes. When this alert indicator comes on, the action alarm should sound and the action light should flash. Immediately stop the machine in a safe manner. Engage the secondary brake and move the lever downward. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause. Do not operate the machine until the cause has been corrected.

This type of indication occurs when the machine is moving more than 8 km/h (5 mph).

Brake On (7) - This symbol indicates that the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position and either one or both of the following conditions exists:

  • The parking brake is engaged.

  • One of the brake master cylinders has a brake overstroke condition.

If this alert indicator comes on during operation and the transmission is in gear, release the parking brake. If the action light continues to flash, and the action alarm continues to sound, immediately stop the machine in a safe manner. Investigate the cause.

The alert indicator for a brake overstroke condition is identical to the indicator that is used for the parking brake. The pistons in the master cylinders will travel too far as a result of low brake fluid level, air in the brake hydraulic circuit, leakage in the brake hydraulic lines and master cylinder piston seal leak.

If releasing the parking brake does not cause this alert indicator to go out, do not operate the machine until the reason for this alert indicator is corrected.

Steering (10) - This symbol indicates that the primary steering oil flow is low. If the alert indicator comes on during operation, the action light should flash and the action alarm should sound. Stop the machine immediately. Safely stop the engine and investigate the cause. Do not operate the machine until the cause has been corrected.
