Problem:

Logged service codes for the Caterpillar Monitoring System may become erased when the key switch is in the "off" position. Normally, the logged service codes are retained in memory until the monitoring system is placed in service mode and the codes are cleared by service personnel. Only service codes stored by the monitoring system are affected by this problem; service codes from other electronic control modules are not stored in the monitoring system, so those codes are not affected. The affected part numbers for the Caterpillar Monitoring System main module are as follows. The part number is printed on a paper label located on the back of the module.

Solution:

Diagnostics for active problems are not affected. The "serv code" indicator will be lit when a fault is present (active). The service code is then displayed when "Service Mode" is selected using the "operator switch". Intermittent problems with harness code inputs, sensor or sender inputs and action alarm or action lamp outputs which occur while the key switch is "on" will still result in logged service codes which can be viewed in "Service Mode". The only information that is not retained in memory when the key switch is turned "off" are logged codes for intermittent problems which occurred while the monitoring system was previously "on". Engineering is aware that logged codes are erased when the power is turned off and a solution is being investigated. News of the change will be announced in a forthcoming service magazine.
