Description of Change: The maintenance and lubrication of the steering shaft on the machines above will increase the service life of the steering shaft. Maintenance and lubrication must be done at the recommended interval in order to achieve increased service life of the steering shaft.
Adaptable To: The new maintenance and lubrication procedure for the 130-5465 Steering Shaft Assembly is adaptable to first production for all machines listed by following the Maintenance and Lubrication Procedure below.

1. Lubricate the two U-joints at fittings (1) with 5P-0960 Multipurpose Lithium Grease NLGI Grade 2-MPC.
NOTE: Ensure that the steering shaft is in the fully collapsed position when lubricating the slip joint.
2. Lubricate the slip joint at fitting (2) with 5P-0960 Multipurpose Lithium Grease NLGI Grade 2-MPC. Apply grease to the slip joint at fitting (2) until grease is seen exiting vent hole (3).
NOTE: If the steering shaft is not fully collapsed when lubricating the slip joint, over greasing can occur and cause the following:
-
- * Installation of the steering shaft assembly onto the machine can be difficult if grease prevents the steering shaft from collapsing to the required installation length.
-
- * Steering can become stiff.
-
- * Internal components can become damaged if excess grease is forced out of the shaft at a high rate when steering the machine.
-
- * Excess grease can accumulate between the steering shaft and the plastic shield. This would cause drag between the steering shaft and the plastic shield.
