Improved Adjustment Procedure For Steering Console Cylinder Eliminates Steering Console Drift {5258}

Reference: Service Manual Module, SENR1428, Specifications, 24H Motor Grader Hydraulic And Steering System. Service Manual Module SENR1429, System Operation, Testing And Adjusting, 24H Motor Grader Hydraulic And Steering System. These service modules are found in Service Manual SENR8695.

The adjustment procedure for the steering console cylinder given in the service manual may be too fine of an adjustment in some cases. If the steering console cylinder is drifting the adjustment should be checked. The following procedure and illustration should be used when adjusting the cylinder.

Lower cross section of 8X-8978 Console Group.

1. Thread the cylinder and rod (1) into the retainer (2).

2. Tighten the cylinder and rod (1) until the pin (3) contacts the ball (4).

3. Loosen the cylinder and rod (1) one half turn.

4. Apply 9S-3263 Compound to the threads below locknut (5) before proceeding to Step 5.

5. Tighten the locknut (5).
