Connecting Rod Bearings

Usage:

Remove And Install Connecting Rod Bearings

start by:

a) remove engine oil cooler

b) remove fresh water pump

c) remove starters

d) remove engine oil pump

e) remove oil pressure relief valve

1. Fasten a hoist and remove the prelubrication oil pump and motor as a unit, (if so equipped). Weight is 105 lb. (47.3 kg).

2. Remove the wiring harness and plate for the prelubrication oil pump and motor.

3. Remove the bolts (1) that hold inspection covers to block. Remove the inspection covers (2) from each side of block.

4. Turn crankshaft (in the direction of normal rotation) until the rod caps (4) can be removed through the opening.

5. Remove the bolts (3) from each rod cap. Remove the rod cap (4).

6. Remove the bearing (5) from the rod cap.

7. Push the connecting rods (6) away from crankshaft.

8. Remove the upper half of bearings from the connecting rods.

9. Install the upper half of new rod bearings in the connecting rods. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearings and crankshaft Journal. Pull the connecting rods with bearing into position on crankshaft.

NOTE: Be sure the tab on back of bearing fits in tab groove (slot) in connecting rod.

10. Install lower half of new bearings in caps. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on bearings.

NOTE: Be sure the tab on back of bearing fits in tab groove (slot) of cap.

11. Check the bearing clearance with wire (A). Install bearing cap on connecting rod. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on threads of rod bolts. Install the rod bolts. Tighten the rod bolts first to a torque of 40 ± 4 lb. ft. (55 ± 5 N·m). Put a mark on bolt heads and bearing caps. Tighten the bolts again 120° from the mark.

TYPICAL EXAMPLE

12. Remove the cap. Measure thickness of the wire. The clearance between a new rod bearing and crankshaft Journal must be .0031 to .0073 in. (0.079 to 0.185 mm). The maximum permissible clearance is .012 in. (0.30 mm).

13. Put the caps in position on the connecting rods and install the nuts. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 ± 4 lb. ft. (55 ± 5 N·m). Put a mark on the bolt heads and bearing caps then tighten the bolts 120° more.

NOTE: Locks and cotter pins are not necessary with this method to tighten the bolts, even though the bolt has a hole.

14. Install the inspection covers with new gaskets.

15. Install the plate and wiring harness for pre-lubrication oil pump and motor (if so equipped). Install the prelubrication oil pump and motor with a hoist. Weight is 105 lb. (47.3 kg)

end by:

a) install fresh water pump

b) install engine oil pump

c) install engine oil cooler

d) install starters

e) install oil pressure relief valve
