Testing & Adjusting

Usage:

Differential, Rear Axle And Brakes

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the differential, rear axle and brakes:

--------WARNING!------

1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel. Stop the backhoe loader engine.

2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel either away from the machine or in view of the operator.

3. Activate the parking brakes. Lower the buckets or implements (loader and backhoe) and stabilizers to the ground.

Visual Checks

Before any operation checks are made to the differential, rear axle and brakes, visually inspect the complete system as follows:

1. Check for oil leaks around differential.

2. Check service brake foot pedal heights and linkage.

3. Check park brake lever and linkage.

Operational Checks

Operational checks can be used to help make diagnosis of poor performance.

Service Brake Checks

1. With the vehicle on dry, level concrete and the engine at full throttle. With the vehicle at a maximum forward ground speed in second gear, 9.5 km/h (5.9 mph) the service brakes shall be capable of stopping the vehicle within 3 m (9.8 ft) with both left and right brake pedals locked together.

Parking Brake Checks

1. With the vehicle on dry, level concrete and the engine at full throttle. The parking brake should prevent vehicle movement when the transmission is in third gear forward.
2. With the vehicle on dry, level concrete and the engine at full throttle. With the vehicle at maximum forward ground speed in first gear, 5.5 km/h (3.4 mph), the parking brake should be capable of stopping the vehicle within three 3 m (9.8 ft).

Adjustments Of Service And Parking Brake

Adjustment of Service Brakes

(1) Pushrod. (2) Nut. (3) Clevis. (4) Clip. (5) Pin.

1. Remove clip (4), pin (5) and the pushrod assembly.

2. Remove the rubber boot from the master cylinder.

3. Adjust nut (2), pushrod (1) and clevis (3) to minimum length (finger tight only).

4. With master cylinder, pedals, springs, etc. assembled to bracket assembly, place pushrod assembly into position and install pin (5) to retain. Do not install clip (4).

5. Adjust pushrod (1) until the end contacts the master cylinder piston. Do not depress the piston.

6. Fully stroke the pedal six times and release to obtain nominal position of master cylinder piston.

7. Re-adjust pushrod (1) to barely contact master cylinder piston. Backoff between 1/2 to 3/4 turn in the opposite direction. Tighten nut (2) being sure pushrod (1) does not move.

8. Measuring at the center of the footpad, pedal freeplay (the distance from fully released until pushrod (1) touches the master cylinder) should now be 6 ± 1 mm (24 ± .04 in).

9. Remove pin (5) and pushrod assembly.

10. Replace the rubber cover over pushrod (1). Replace pushrod assembly, pin (5) and clip (4).

11. Replace the rubber cover over master cylinder spigot.

12. Repeat Steps 1 thru 11 for the other pedal.

13. Verify that the machine meets the service brake check in the Operational Checks before placing the machine back into service.

Adjustment Of Service Brake Switch

1. Remove cover from bracket above pedals.

2. Loosen the switch mounting screws.

3. Raise the pedal against the stop setscrew.

4. Move the switch toward the pedal until a "click" is heard. Tighten the switch mounting screws.

5. The switch should "click" when the pedal is pushed down slightly from the released position, and the switch should "click" again when the pedal is returned to the released position.

Brake System Bleeding Procedure

1. Fill reservoir with oil and add oil as required to maintain levels during bleeding. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance manual, Form SEBU6414 for fluid recommendations.

2. Lock the brake pedals together.

3. Open the left hand bleed screw on the rear axle.

4. Connect clear tubing to the bleed screw and immerse in brake oil.

5. Steadily, fully stroke the brake pedals. Pause at top of pedal return to allow master cylinder to fully refill.

6. Continue stroking until no air escapes for five pedal strokes. Fully depress the pedals and tighten the bleed screw.

7. Unlock the pedals.

8. Open the right hand bleed screw on the rear axle.

9. Connect clear tubing to the bleed screw and immerse in brake oil.

10. Steadily, fully stroke right hand brake pedal, pausing at top of pedal return to allow master cylinder to fully refill.

11. Continue stroking until no air escapes for five pedal strokes. Fully depress the pedal and tighten the bleed screw.

12. Verify that the machine meets the service brake check in the Operational Checks before placing the machine back into service.

Adjustment Of Parking Brake

(1) Handlever. (2) Rod. (3) Pins. (4) Rod. (5) Lever. (6) Caliper. (7) Lock Bolt. (8) Modulating Body. (9) Pads. (10) Disc. (A) Bottom of mounting bracket.

1. Remove caliper actuation lever (5) and install caliper (6).

2. Loosen lock bolt (7) and adjust modulating body (8) until pads (9) are tight on disc (10). Backoff modulating body (8) to the first flat and tighten lock bolt (7).

3. Install caliper lever (5) with top of lever even with the bottom of mounting bracket (point A). The lever should point to left of vehicle.

4. For a starting point, adjust rod (4) to 106.0 ± 2.0 mm (4.17 ± .08 in) between clevis pin centerlines with the pins oriented 90° to each other.

5. Place handlever (1) in fully released position and caliper actuation lever (5) in horizontal position.

6. Adjust rod (2) so pins (3) slip freely in the connected levers.

7. Verify when hand lever (1) is fully released that a fully released condition occurs at caliper (6) and pads (9).

8. Verify that the machine meets the parking brake check in the Operational Checks before placing the machine back into service.

Adjustment Of Parking Brake Switch

1. Remove cover from around parking brake handle.

2. Move the parking brake handle to the released position.

3. Loosen the switch mounting screws.

4. Move the switch toward the parking brake handle until a "click" is heard. Tighten the switch mounting screws.

Adjustment Of Differential Lock

Differential Lock Linkage
(1) Pedal. (2) Locknuts. (3) Floor plate. (4) Tube. (5) Clevis

1. Adjust clevis (5) until flattened part of tube (4) is 10 ± 1 mm (.39 ± .04 in) from platform floor plate (3).

2. Adjust pedal (1) height by loosening nuts (2) and turning pedal (1) to desired height.

3. Tighten all locknuts and insert all lock pins.
