Figure 1. Correct Method To Make New Rings Ready For Installation.

Figure 2. Wrong Method To Make New Rings Ready For Installation.

NOTE: There is a correct method to make the nonmetal rotating type rings ready for installation. Use your hands on each end of the ring to pull the ends several inches by each other. See Figure 1. Use care to keep the ring shape like a circle. This makes an even bend (or ring "set") all the way around the ring. When the ring is in the groove, the ends must make contact with each other so the ring will not hit the edge of the cage bore.

115. Put gear (149) in position in hub (148).

116. Install ring (150) that holds the gear to hub (148).

117. If dowel (151) was removed from the hub, install the dowel so that the end of the dowel is 2.403 ± 0.13 mm (.0946 ± .005 in.) above the bearing surface of the hub.

118. Use tool (C), and install bearing (153) in cage (152).

119. Align the notch in bearing (153) with the dowel in hub (148), and install the bearing and cage on the hub as an assembly.

120. Use tool (B), and install snap ring (154) in the groove in hub (148).

121. Put manifold (155) in place on cage (152), and install bolts (156).

122. Fasten a hoist and two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts to cage (152). Align the gear in hub (148) with the gears in carrier assembly (21), and install the hub cage and manifold as an assembly.

123. Put dowels (159) and springs (157) in position in the holes in housing (147).

124. Put two discs (158) and plate (160) in position on housing (147). Alternate the components starting with a disc.

125. Install rings (161) and (163) in the grooves in piston (162) as shown. Put clean SAE 30W oil on the rings.

126. Put piston (162) in position on dowels (159) and springs (157). Make sure the springs fit into the holes in piston (162).

127. Install two 1/2"-13 NC x 4 in. guide bolts in the manifold. Fasten a hoist and two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts to housing assembly (164), and put the housing assembly in position on the manifold and planetary group. The weight of the planetary group is 32 kg (70 lb.).

128. Install bolts (165) that hold housing assembly (164) to the manifold.

129. Install two long bolts (167) and bolts (166) that hold he housing assembly to the planetary group.

130. Remove the planetary group from tooling (A). The weight of the planetary group is 612 kg (1350 lb.).

131. Put transmission case assembly (170) in position on tool (A) as shown. The weight of the transmission case assembly is 204 kg (450 lb.).

132. Install O-ring seal (168) on planetary group (169).

133. Fasten a hoist and tool (J) to planetary group (169). Put planetary group (169) in position in transmission case assembly (170), and install the bolts. The weight of the planetary group is 612 kg (1350 lb.).

134. Put bracket assembly (171) in position on the planetary group, and install the bolts that hold it.

135. Check to make sure the pistons are free in their clutch housings with tool (G) as follows:

a. Put air (free of water) under a pressure of 690 to 1030 kPa (100 to 150 psi) into each of the seven oil passages.

b. If the pistons do not move, put a small amount of clean SAE 30 oil in each passage. Check for movement again. If the pistons still do not move, the transmission must be disassembled and the pistons checked.
