NOTE: This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS5529" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
NOTE: Although this Program is to be administered as described above on the Affected Product, parts should be removed from Parts Stock as soon as possible.
NOTE: If a hose is replaced on one engine of a two engine powered boat, the other engine's hose may also be replaced at this time. Separate claims should be filed for the engines. Engines in dealer inventory may also have their hose replaced and the zinc rod removed prior to installation in a boat.
NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the December 13, 1998 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Affected Product, Parts Needed, Service Claim Allowances, and Rework Procedure.

- 8X4177 and 152-6439 Hoses on certain 3176C and 3196 Marine Engines equipped with 1347213 Fuel Cooler Gp. have been subject to collapse because of lack of rigidity. This causes overheating and failures of the raw water pump. A new 1632919/">163-2919 Hose will offer sufficient rigidity to prevent these problems.
Sacrificial zinc rods in marine raw water systems decompose with time. In these engines, the zinc rod in the downstream side of the fuel cooler may break off and travel to the inlet of the raw water pump. Impeller damage to the pump could result. The "downstream only" zinc rod must be replaced with a plug.

Rework Procedure
This procedure was a topic on the Power Connection Broadcast on October 21, 1998 - LEVN4509
NOTE: If a hose is replaced on one engine of a two engine powered boat, the other engine's hose may also be replaced at this time. Separate claims should be filed for the engines. Engines in dealer inventory may also have their hose replaced prior to installation in a boat, or engines at boat manufacturing facilities may be updated as well prior to customer delivery. Make certain to check for the correct plug in the fuel cooler as directed.
1. Begin by loosening the four hose clamps from the former (old) hose.
2. Remove the four bolts that affix the raw water pump inlet elbow to the pump.
3. Remove the former hose and inlet elbow from the pump and cooler. Be sure to either close the sea water valve or have a 2.5 inch plug ready to insert into the fuel cooler outlet tube after you remove the former hose.
NOTE: When you are ready to install the new hose, REMOVE the 2.5 inch plug inserted in step 3 if applicable.
NOTE: Check the fuel cooler for zinc anodes. There is a location at both the inlet and outlet of the fuel cooler for plugs. Early engines had zinc anodes at both locations. The zinc anode at the OUTLET of fuel cooler has been removed to prevent raw water pump damage should it break free. A new 9B0887 Plug has been released and will not accept a zinc anode. Both plugs may be painted red even though the proper plug is installed. To check, do the following:
a.) Check the size of the wrench required to fit both plugs.
b.) The proper plug (9B0887) which does not take a Zinc Anode requires an inch wrench or is inch across the flats. THIS plug does NOT require replacement even though it may be painted red. It should be located at the outlet of the fuel cooler adjacent to the new hose. Remove the red paint from the plug.
c.) The plug which WILL take a Zinc Anode and requires a inch wrench or is inch across the flats. This plug will be painted red and if it is in the outlet of the fuel cooler adjacent to the new hose (Location A), it must be removed and exchanged for the 9B0887 Plug. The 9B0887 Plug must be installed to help prevent future inadvertent installation of a Zinc Anode as it has no provision for inserting a zinc rod.
NOTE: The new 1632919/">163-2919 Hose must NOT be deformed or CRUSHED during the installation procedure. This will damage the hose and allow it to collaps in operation. Review First and Second Topics on Power Connection presented October, 1998 - Media Number LEVN4509.
4. Install the new 1632919 Hose onto the fuel cooler outlet tube, and slip two hose clamps down the hose. Be sure the clamp mechanisms are positioned 180 degrees from each other.
5. Now slip the remaining two hose clamps onto the hose (Be sure the clamp mechanisms are positioned 180 degrees from each other) and insert the inlet elbow of the pump with the four bolt flange positioned towards the pump.
6. Rotate the hose on the cooler outlet tube until the flange is in position inlet.
7. Loosen the two bolts at the base of the fuel cooler and swivel the cooler so the elbow flange is parallel to the pump surface.
8. Be sure the 2H4145 Seal is in the groove of the inlet elbow and install the four bolts into the flange and tighten.
9. Tighten the two bolts at the base of the fuel cooler.
10. Tighten all four hose clamps and be sure to position them 180 degrees from each other.
NOTE: The inlet to the fuel cooler should be inspected for sea grass or other debris.
11. If the sea water valve was closed, open the valve at this time.
