Radiator Tank (Header) - Remove and Install

Usage:

Removal Procedure

Start By:

a. Install the steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system. The capacity of the cooling system is 56 L (15 US gal).

2. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect hose assemblies (1), (3) and (4) from the radiator header tank.

3. Remove the two cable straps that secure electrical connector (2) to hose (3). Disconnect electrical connector (2).

4. Remove the three cable straps that secure hose (5) to the header tank. Disconnect hose (5) from the fitting below the cooling system pressure cap.

5. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect hose (6) from the radiator header tank.

6. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to the radiator header tank, as shown.

7. Remove four bolts (7) and the washers. Remove the radiator header tank from the machine. The weight of the radiator header tank is 36 kg (79 lb).

Installation Procedure

1. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to the radiator header tank, as shown. Put the radiator header tank in position on the rear frame. The weight of the radiator header tank is 36 kg (79 lb).

2. Install four bolts (7) and the washers.

3. Connect hose (6) to the radiator header tank and tighten the hose clamp.

4. Connect hose (5) to the fitting below the cooling system pressure cap. Install three cable straps to secure hose (5) to the header tank, as shown.

5. Connect hose assemblies (1), (3) and (4) to the radiator header tank. Tighten the hose clamps.

6. Connect electrical connector (2). Install two cable straps to secure electrical connector (2) to hose (3), as shown.

7. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the machine that is being serviced.

End By:

a. Remove the steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
