Use Only Paint To Mark Connecting Rod Caps For Torque-Turn Method

Usage:

All Engines

SUPPLEMENT: 08/00/87

ENGINE NEWS, JUNE 1987, PAGE 5, "Use Only Paint To Mark Connecting Rod Caps For Torque-Turn Method" on all engines.

A reevaluation of field data indicates that there is a chance of connecting rods failing that have been center-punched as indicated. Therefore, change the last sentence to read, "Caps that have been marked with a center punch may NOT be reused."

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Some servicemen have used a center punch to mark the connecting rod bearing cap when using the torque-turn method to tighten the bolts. See illustration.

Location of punch marks where paint should have been used.

Do not use this method of marking the cap. Instead, mark the rod cap and bolt with a paint marker when the torque-turn method is used. Caps that have been marked with a center punch may not be reused.
