Inlet

Air is pulled through the inlet air cleaner into the system.

Fuel is mixed with the air before the mixture is compressed by the turbocharger.

The compressed air/fuel mixture is cooled by a two stage aftercooler.

The air/fuel mixture is throttled to the intake manifold.

The intake manifold distributes the air/fuel mixture to the cylinder heads.

The cylinder heads contain valves that are controlled by a camshaft. The valves open to the cylinder to provide air/fuel mixture for combustion.

Note: A compressor bypass valve is located between the outlet of the aftercooler and the inlet to the throttle. Under certain conditions the valve may be opened to bypass the air/fuel mixture back into the air inlet to mitigate turbocharger surge.

Exhaust

The cylinder heads contain exhaust valves that are controlled by a camshaft. The valves open to the exhaust manifold.

After combustion, the exhaust gas exits the cylinders to the exhaust manifold.

The exhaust manifolds deliver exhaust flow to drive the turbocharger turbine. The turbocharger turbine drives the turbocharger compressor.

Exhaust gas from the turbocharger exits the turbocharger turbine through the exhaust elbow.

Note: Some of the exhaust gas is diverted away from the turbocharger turbine to the exhaust elbow by the exhaust bypass valve to control boost pressure.
