Personal injury or death can result if spilled fuel ignites. Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance". Refer to step for maintenance that DOES NOT require the engine to be running.

- Place a suitable container under drain plug (5) in filter housing bottom cover (4).
- Remove the drain plug, and allow the fuel to drain from the secondary fuel filter assembly. Install the drain plug.
- Use a strap wrench or hex fitting (6) to remove filter element housing (3) from filter mounting base (2).
- Properly dispose of the used filter element. Wash the filter housing in clean , nonflammable solvent.
- Clean the filter mounting base. Make sure that all the used seals are removed.

NOTICE Do not fill the secondary and tertiary fuel filters with fuel before installing. The fuel would not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
- The outer margin of the top portion of the filter element serves as the seal between the filter housing tube and the filter mounting base. Lubricate this portion of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
- Lubricate the seal that is in the center opening of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.

NOTICE Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
- Carefully position the new filter element in the filter housing. Then, install the filter housing and new filter element on the filter mounting base and begin to tighten by hand.
- Tighten the cap by using hex (6) on bottom cap, or tighten the filter housing by using a strap type wrench applied only to the filter housing tube (3). Tighten the lower housing until there is no gap between the housing (3) and base (2). Do not exceed a torque of
237 N·m (175 lb ft) . - Open the fuel supply shutoff valve.
- Prime the fuel system.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.
- Start the engine and operate until operating temperature is reached. Stop the engine. Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance". Inspect component and area for signs of leakage. Make any necessary repairs.
