Introduction
This Special Instruction contains information for the Payload Monitor (Scoreboard Display) settings adjustments on Large Mining Trucks.
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.
Safety Section
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures also should be observed.
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe.
Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures used.
Ground the equipment. Improper grounding will result in electrical current paths that are uncontrolled and unreliable. Uncontrolled electrical circuit paths can result in damage to the equipment. Uncontrolled electrical circuit paths can also cause electrical activity that may degrade the electronics and communications. Ensure that all grounds are secure and free of corrosion.
Before starting this installation, in addition to the normal safety precautions taken while performing maintenance on heavy machinery, the following lockout/tagout procedure is recommended:
- Move the machine to a smooth, level location, and away from other working machines and personnel.
- Lower the implements to the ground.
- Stop the engine.
- Engage the parking brake for the machine.
- Place the disconnect switch in the OFF position.

Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Improper operation of an access platform could result in injury or death. Operators must carry out their duties properly and follow all instructions and guidelines given for the machine and access platform. |
Failure to use an approved access system during installation and removal of components could result in slipping and falling which could result in personal injury or death. To prevent injury or death, use an approved access system to reach the appropriate mounting locations of the components. Do not climb on the machine. Maintain three-points of contact and/or use a safety harness. |
Payload Monitor (Scoreboard Display)
Illustration 2 | g02243117 |
Typical Scoreboard for Large Off-Highway Trucks |
Note: The first digit of the scoreboard is a number one, unless the load is less than 100. If the load unit is less than 100, only the last two digits are displayed.
The payload scoreboard display is designed to operate with any standard VIMS or TPMS system to display the payload weight. The weight is derived from the truck payload system and is displayed in English tons or Metric tons. Typically two payload scoreboard displays are installed on the truck, on the right side and the left (cab) side.

Dip Switches Located on Rear of Payload Scoreboard Display |
Switches are used to set the options for the two payload scoreboard displays. These "dip" switches are on the back of the scoreboard display under a cover plate. To access the switches, remove the four bolts that hold the plate to the back of the scoreboard display.
Illustration 4 | g03371379 |
Scoreboard Display Option Dip Switches and Functions |
Dip switch 1 - Off = Normal, On = Display 888
Dip switch 2 - Off = Normal, 1 and 2 on = count up
Dip switch 3 - Off = Blank on Empty, On = 000 on empty
Dip switch 4 - Not Used
Dip switch 5 - Not Used
Dip switch 6 - Not Used
Dip switch 7 - Off = VIMS, On = Not used
Dip switch 8 - Off = Metric, On = English
Dip switch 9 - Off = Disable Transmit, On = Enable
Dip switch 10 - Off = High Z Mode, On = Normal
Refer to the following tables to set the options on the payload scoreboard display.

10 | ON(5) | 10 | OFF |
(1) | Switch (1) is a test switch that turns on all segments of the payload scoreboard display to test the lamps. The display should read 888 when the switch is in the ON position. |
(2) | Switch (2) is a test switch that is used with switch (1). When switch (1) and switch (2) are in the ON position at the same time, the display of the scoreboard should count upward. |
(3) | The scoreboard units, "Standard", or "Metric", will match the selection made under the units of measurement in the Advisor Display. This function occurs if the configuration settings under the "VIMS APP" are set to "Count UP" using Cat ET. |
(4) | "ON" position allows the data to be transferred to the second scoreboard. Making the scoreboard the "Master" scoreboard (on left cab side). |
(5) | "ON" position allows the scoreboard to receive and acknowledge message from the VIMS Module. The master scoreboard (on left cab side ) must have this switch ON. If "OFF", the master scoreboard will not acknowledge the first message received and will freeze on that value. |

A scoreboard display that is directly connected to the VIMS system must have transmit disabled to allow the telemetry system to communicate with VIMS. Also, a scoreboard display, which is directly connected to VIMS, must be in high impedance mode so as not to load the VIMS transmit signal. Switch 9 "OFF" disables the payload monitor transmit. Switch 10 "OFF" puts the payload monitor in high impedance mode.
