Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Electric starters may be incorrectly configured as primary on certain Cat® Generator Sets. C175-16 and C175-20 Generator sets shipped with redundant starter option, both the starters may be incorrectly configured as primary in the Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) configuration.

The electric starter part numbers are listed in Table 1.

Table 1
Part  Part Name
276-8884  Electric Starting Motor Gp
276-8882  Electric Starting Motor Gp

If both the starting systems 1 and 2 are selected as primary, all four starters will try to engage simultaneously. All starters engaging simultaneously may result in premature wear to starter and flywheel teeth. Starter disengagement issues may also occur as a result.

Solution

Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not been identified. As an interim action, configure the desired starting system (1 - Right Side or 2 - Left Side) as "Primary" the remaining as "Secondary". Future software releases will prevent both systems selected as primary.
